Like many ideas that spark a new period of work, this one came by accident. The projector was set up by mistake so that the feed from a live camera ricocheted back upon itself, creating never-ending reflections.
In this piece, Weis created a linear narrative flow wherein sound, text and movement interweave, as one or the other comes to the fore. The video feedback effect creates a dreamy environment that suggests looking back through time.
Weis collaborated with performer Scott Heron over the course of several years to develop Bad Spot. After they completed the work during a residency at Bennington College, they sent a video to composer Zeena Parkins. She then composed the score to the video, in much the same way that a movie soundtrack is created.
