Electric Haiku: Calm as Custard is a continuation of the structure Weis first used in Electric Haiku. Much like a book of short stories, the solos and duets function both as a collection and as individual elements. Each section, or “haiku,” tells its own story, combining video and live performance. In one haiku, a performer swings a camera affixed to a long board. The projected image shows his face, static in the frame, as the background whirls behind him.
The characters are introduced individually, in their own contexts and situations. The closing section combines the characters in a final musical number. In their coming together, it becomes clear that they are all members of the same family band.
